FT8 Hub

FT8 is a weak‑signal digital mode with 15‑second T/R cycles. It’s perfect for snagging DX when the band sounds dead — and for flexing your time‑sync game.

This page covers: a 3‑minute quick‑start, common activity centers, FT‑710/FT‑891 setup notes, software links, a clean‑TX checklist, and a small gallery.

⚡ Quick‑Start (WSJT‑X)

  1. Install WSJT‑X (or JTDX). In Settings → Radio: select your rig (CAT) and the correct COM port; set PTT via CAT or RTS/DTR.
  2. In Settings → Audio: choose the radio’s USB codec (FT‑710) or your external USB sound card (FT‑891).
  3. Sync the PC clock (system NTP or a time‑sync tool). Aim for < 1 s offset.
  4. On the rig, use the data audio path (USB‑D / DATA‑USB). Set power modest (25–50 W). Keep ALC barely moving.
  5. Pick a band and tune to the FT8 activity center (below). Watch decodes, then call or answer CQ.

Tip: Use PSK Reporter to see who heard you. It’s like radar for your signal.
